6 Weber State players named Big Sky football preseason all-conference

Monday , July 16, 2018 - 2:27 PM

After a historic 2017 season, six Weber State football players were voted by media members to the 2018 Big Sky Conference preseason all-conference team, the conference announced Monday.

Senior special teams player Brady May, senior offensive lineman Iosua Opeta, sophomore return specialist Rashid Shaheed, senior linebacker LeGrand Toia, sophomore placekicker Trey Tuttle and junior defensive end Jonah Williams were voted to the team.

Weber State picked 2nd in Big Sky football preseason polls

Five of them were voted to at least one All-American team and all six earned all-conference honors after the 2017 season. WSU’s six honorees were the most for any team.

UC Davis wide receiver Keelan Doss was voted preseason offensive MVP. Montana linebacker Josh Buss earned the nod as defensive MVP.

May, a fullback who rushed for two touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 108 yards last season, has turned heads with stellar special teams play.

Opeta started all 14 games on the offensive line last season and was first team all-Big Sky.

Shaheed quickly emerged as WSU’s big-play threat, hauling in 545 receiving yards on offense. On special teams, he averaged 29.7 yards per kickoff return — fourth nationally and best-ever in WSU history — including two kick returns for touchdowns, one of them for 100 yards.

Toia led the Wildcats last year with 79 tackles and was first team all-Big Sky.

Tuttle was 19 of 22 on field goal attempts last year as a freshman, tying the school mark for most field goals in a season.

Williams returns after recording 5.5 sacks and 37 tackles from the defensive end position last season.

The Wildcats open the 2018 season with a road game Aug. 30 at Utah.
