Grayson, Grundy claim regional wrestling titles

Grayson County edged Lebanon on Saturday to win the Region 2D wrestling championship at Union in Big Stone Gap.

Tanner Jones and Cole Anders won the 106- and 113-pound division titles to lead Grayson County to 161-point finish.

Lebanon had 155 points and Richlands was a close third with 153.

John Battle (117), Graham (111), Union (95), Wise Central (79), Marion (77), Virginia High (66), Tazewell (64) and Lee High (54.5) rounded out the field.

Central had two individual champions with Brayden Spears winning the 126 class and Jonah Phillips taking the 138 title.

Union finished with one individual champ, Mason Polier, in the 195 class.

The Mountain 7 District had one other individual champ in John Battle’s Johnathan Almany, who won in 120.

Other division champs were Graham’s Caleb Fritz (132) and Justin Fritz (145); Richlands’ Jason Puckett (152), Waylin Foster (160) and Luke Martin (220); Lebanon’s Cole Stoots (170) and Logan Smith (182); and Marion’s Will Moss (285).


Grundy continued its domination of Southwest Virginia by winning titles in seven classes and compiling 295 points in the 1D/1C Super Region at Castlewood on Saturday.

Rural Retreat finished a distant second with 193.

Galax (141), George Wythe (126), Chilhowie (106), Northwood (90), Castlewood (89), Parry McCluer (88), Auburn (73) and Covington (65) completed the top 10.

Grundy’s champions were Kaleb Horn (106), Brandon Owens (126), Chris Stiltner (132), Gabe Fiser (152), Derek Endicott (170), Matthew McCowan (220) and Michael McCowen (285).

Other winners were Castlewood’s Cole Jessee (113) and Casey Bush (195), George Wythe’s Sebastian Lamrouex (120), Galax’s Josina Spurlock (138) and Caxton Vaught (160), Chilhowie’s Noah Widener (145) and Rural Retreat’s Ethan Martin (182).
