KINGSPORT — A family with local roots will star in a national television show later this month.

Jason Jones — along with his wife, Brittany, and children, Austen and Andrew — will search for a new vacation home on HGTV’s popular show “Beach Hunters.” His parents, Steven and Ginny Jones of Kingsport, will also be featured in the episode.

“Jason had been wanting a place at the beach,” Steven Jones said. “We had a little condo, and when the kids were younger and they weren’t married, it was OK for all of us. … But as they’ve grown — there’s all three boys and eight grandkids now — it’s just not big enough. So Jason decided he was going to buy a place for his family, primarily.”

Meet the Joneses

Steven Jones was born and raised in Kingsport and previously served as judge of the Sullivan County General Sessions and Juvenile Court. He and his wife have three adult sons, all of whom were also born and raised in te Model City.

Jason, the middle son, and his family will be the focus of the episode. He and his wife, both Nashville-based doctors, will search for a home in Folly Beach, South Carolina, just south of Charleston.

“They wanted Folly Beach because it’s sort of laid-back,” Steven Jones said. “There’s not a whole lot of traffic down there; in fact, most people don’t drive cars. They get around on what they call low-speed vehicles … and everything’s close there.”

Making the episode

Steven Jones said Jason and his family didn’t seek out the show. Rather, they were approached by one of the showrunners, and at first they were a little hesitant to participate.

“They did talk them into it,” Steven Jones said. “They went into it a little tepidly, but they thought, ‘Well, why not?’ ”

Filming took place over three days in early February, Steven Jones said. He and Ginny were present during filming but stayed off camera most of the time to watch their grandchildren. They will, however, make an appearance at the end of the episode.

“It’s going to really be something. … The location is just prime,” said Steven Jones of the home his son and family chose. “I think he really did well.”
