WISE — A Coeburn man has been charged with assaulting two law enforcement officers arising out of an encounter at the Flatwoods Job Corps Center near Coeburn on April 29.

At 4:30 p.m. on that date, Wise County Central Dispatch received a call about a man lying in the yard in front of the office at the center. A Wise County deputy arrived and identified the man as 37-year-old Antwain Hale and noted that Hale appeared to be under the influence of an undetermined intoxicant.

The deputy also determined that Hale had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Russell County. The Wise County Sheriff’s Office said when the officer attempted to take Hale into custody, Hale started to resist and failed to obey the deputy’s commands.

The WCSO said Hale kicked the deputy several times and attempted to crawl beneath the patrol car. At that point, a Coeburn police officer arrived to assist, and Hale allegedly struck that officer several times.

The WCSO said the deputy and Coeburn officer deployed their Tasers to gain control of Hale and secure him in handcuffs. Hale was taken to Mountain View Regional Hospital in Norton, where he was admitted. The WCSO guarded Hale until his release from the hospital on Wednesday.

Hale is currently being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield charged with two counts of assault on law enforcement, obstruction of justice, public intoxication and failure to appear in Russell County.
