WISE — The man believed to be the target in a Wise County graveyard ambush is in custody on charges from a separate incident.

Sheriff Grant Kilgore said Friday that William Mattias Mills, 35, Coeburn, was extradited this week from Tennessee after his arrest there on a fugitive warrant. Mills was charged before the Monday shooting with felony malicious wounding and misdemeanor assault and battery stemming from an incident Kilgore said was not directly related to the shooting.

Police found Mills, who had been shot multiple times, in a wooded area near a cemetery in the Stephens area near Wise after midnight Monday. According to investigators, Mills said Marshea Noel Absher, 29, Norton, picked him up and drove him to the cemetery, where someone opened the vehicle’s driver-side door and shot at him.

Absher was found in the car suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. Christopher Dale Stephens, 39, Norton, was found dead near the car.

Jarred Ray Hash, 39, Norton, was arrested Monday and charged with the aggravated malicious wounding of Mills and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Kilgore declined to release more details about Monday’s shooting, but said the investigation is continuing.
