JONESVILLE — The Virginia State Police is investigating the circumstances of a pedestrian struck by a truck in Lee County early Monday.

The VSP reported responding to the incident at 5:20 a.m. Monday where an adult male pedestrian was reportedly in a crouching position in the right travel lane of westbound U.S. Route 58A less than a mile east of State Route 632.

A box truck traveling west on 58 swerved into the left lane in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian in the right travel lane. The right front fender of the box truck struck the pedestrian and knocked him into the right shoulder of the highway.

The VSP said the pedestrian was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport for treatment of serious injuries. As of 9:20 a.m. the VSP was still working to confirm the pedestrian's identity.

The VSP said the male driver of the box truck immediately stopped at the scene and was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
